WHY DID PONTIAC HAVE TO DIE?????????
*Throws major hissy fit kicking and breaking things*

Somethings are worth questioning, other are not.

I would like to think that if Pontiac were here today, the models would be down-market versions of Cadillac's sports sedans. In reality it would probably be a new G8, and a bunch of rebadged Opel's.

Because most people thought it sucked and its death was well-deserved.
Me? Pontiac would have been America's Holden.

I laugh ever time i see one of these, some one in my town has a yellow one.
also I just found this

No, Saturn was GM's rebadged Opel division after they completely lost the point of why they created Saturn in the first place. Pontiac as Holden would've been pretty cool.

Trying to think of what their lineup would be today
VF-based G8 with V6 and V8 options, Charger competitor.
New G6 using turbo motor and coupe and convertible models. GXP model with up-rated 2.0T.
Astra-based G5 with GXP performance model using 2.0T, hatch only.
Sonic-based G3 with GXP model using 1.6T from Cascada, hatch only.
Updated Solstice using new 2.5L and 2.0T motor for GXP, coupe and roaster.
New Torrent with new 3.6 and 2.8T that Cadillac used here for a while for GXP model.
Manuals available on everything except the Torrent.

And holden is dying too sooooo.......yeah, pontiac in the modern era was going to die any way you cut it.
![]() 02/17/2015 at 23:52 |

And total sales would struggle to break 200k so they'd be axed all over again.......
Sorry, but pontiac was a brand that had no identity in the 90s and 2000s. Even a rebirth as a "performance" division makes no sense. GM is too big for a dedicated small performance division filled with cars that people only want ot buy used.

I never said they should do this to bring Pontiac back, I was just speculating and trying to put together a portfolio using what GM currently has for use in their other brands.
It's called having fun, you should try it some time.

I do have fun. I drive what is actually built and that I bought new, with my own money, to support more being built in the future.
And the problem with all of these dream portfolios is that none of them come anywhere close to being realistic. Yours is okay. But it becomes really hard to convince automakers to take us seriously when every other person is clamoring for a shooting brake corvette when they haven't spent more than 25 grand TOTAL on all their cars since 1998.

This. Holden is dying because even Australia is giving up on larger,RWD, "sports oriented" offerings. So it stands to reason that a pontiac that exists to rebadge holdens would be in similar shape.

I'm about 99% sure anyone building these dream portfolios isn't wanting the automaker to take them seriously, especially ones with shooting brake Corvettes and manual, diesel everything. At least I sure as hell hope not.
As for buying new, I'm not to the age of being able to finance a car new, or CPO even. My parents buy nothing but new though, and even supported Saturn in their dying years. They've also just bought a Fusion, which I'm sure helped pay for the development of the Focus RS, GT, and GT350R.

You say that, yet I see daily people commenting with "I WOULD BUY ______ IF IT WAS MADE" and it's a manual 3WD diesel shooting brake miata or something stupid like that. And I do have a friend who not only says with a straight face things like "GM needs to bring back a new fiero, if only for a year" but then goes on and admits he'd only buy it used. I have some other friends who aren't quite that stupid, but still......Yes, a lot of those people are serious and think that every car should be a jalop favorite. Which is funny, because then I think SUVs will be the "jalop" car to have because they're weird and different.
And while my circumstances are more positive than many of my peers, I bought my car at the age of 24. Many of my friends bought new cars in this timeframe. We have between us - 2 FRS, 1 FoST, 1FiST, 1 Mk7 GTI, 1 NC Miata, and 1 370Z. All bought new. Early 20 somethings have money, and we are willing to spend it, just only so much. ANd we are all jalops in my close circle. Friends outside of that circule bought everything else that's more "normal" around the 20k mark. Multiple cruzes, focuses, darts, civics, etc....

Because the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry considered GM's plan to downsize Pontiac to just 3 performance oriented models sold through selected Buick-GMC dealers to be a misuse of limited funds and directed that it be killed entirely instead.

I always assume these people aren't being serious. Of couse there's always the slim few that are, and should be ignored and judged as not understanding how the real world works.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think banks give $20k loans to 16 year olds. If they did I'd be buying myself a new Cruze 1LT though.

Graduate college after working your ass off in internships and co-op assignments and driving a cheap GM car (or honda, your pick). Plunk down 20% as the down payment and you'd be surprised how many places will give you a 0% car loan when you're 23/24. I actually had a 0% offer at 22 for a cruze I was looking at but insurance was my stopping factor. Michigan is a no-fault state. Any new car is at least 3k for comprehensive coverage and that is mandatory for most car loans. Favorite quote is still the 12,000/yr quote for an Evo X. Pony cars with V8s were something like 5 or 6 grand until I turned 25. The FiST is a very affordable 1400/yr.
THat's part of why I don't think these performance cars would sell too well (and why I actively discourage people from even publically posting their dream portfolios, since this is the sort of thing that gets read) - you will struggle to afford the incidentals like insurance and registration on them. A fiesta ST and Focus ST can be had for a similar sticker price. But month to month, the FIesta will consistently ring up anywhere from 100 to 300$ less a month to run depending on fuel useage and insurance rates. FOr me, with my company, a Focus ST is another 80$/month. A standard Focus or even a Fusion is the same price.

Yeah there were just too many GM owned badges when the economy went south.
Maybe there would still be room for big RWD Holdens and Pontiac versions of them if the economy had not been hit so hard. But cuts had to be made and it couldn't be Buick that went cause China likes Buicks.

because bean counters fucked them over good & proper!
![]() 02/18/2015 at 02:31 |

Because almost nobody bought the sedan version of this car, unless it had $5,000 on the hood. And because GM couldn't make money on it even if they had been able to sell it without incentives because the business case for it sucked.

Because everything except the Sky, G8 and Astra looked like ass? If they had wanted to survive they just would have imported all European models, as it was they gave us this:
What were they thinking? That is in my top five ugliest cars of the modern era.
(I'm lumping Saturn and Pontiac together as they were both handled like crap)
